The Genetic Origin of the Kurds: A Comprehensive Haplogroup-Based Analysis
This review examines the genetic structure of Kurdish populations via paternal (Y-DNA) and maternal (mtDNA) haplogroups. Kurds derive mainly from the ancient Fertile Crescent / Zagros Neolithic indigenous layer; Iron Age Iranic (Aryan) migrations added a linguistic and partly genetic layer (R1a-Z93). The paternal line is dominated by Neolithic farmer lineages J2, E1b1b, J1 and G2a; the maternal line by Western Eurasian H, U, J and K. Kurds are thus both ancient and indigenous, and admixed.
